Overview
Huangshan is the mountain that shaped Chinese landscape painting — granite peaks rising straight out of cloud, pines clinging to impossible ledges, and light that changes every twenty minutes.
Most visitors come for a day. You will spend two nights up top, which is the whole point: it puts you on the summit for sunset and again for sunrise, when the cloud sea fills the valleys and the day-trippers are still asleep in Tangkou. You ride the cable car up, walk the West Sea and Bright Summit areas at an unhurried pace, and descend on day three via the Greeting Pine and the Hot Spring area.
Expect four to six hours of walking on stone steps per day, with steep sections. The steps are well maintained and your guide sets a pace that keeps the group together, but a reasonable level of fitness is needed. Porters can carry your bag for a small fee, and we strongly recommend packing light.
- Two nights on the mountain for both sunset and sunrise
- Cloud sea from Bright Summit, the highest public viewpoint at 1,860 m
- West Sea Canyon's sheer granite cliffs and floating walkways
- The Greeting Pine, Huangshan's most photographed tree
- Sunrise over a sea of cloud with the day crowds absent
- Optional descent on foot through the Hot Spring scenic area

1 Arrival at Tangkou, Foot of Huangshan
Dinner Tangkou, mountain-foot hotelAfternoon: Your guide meets you at Huangshan North railway station — a 2.5-hour high-speed ride from Shanghai — or at Tunxi airport, and transfers you the 40 minutes to Tangkou, the village at the base of the mountain.
Late afternoon: A short walk along the valley to loosen up, or a soak in the hot springs that give the area its older name of Tangquan. Your guide briefs you on tomorrow's route, weather forecast and what to carry.
Evening: An early dinner of Hui cuisine — the regional cooking of southern Anhui, heavier on wild herbs, bamboo shoots and preserved meats than what you will have eaten in Shanghai. Lights out early; the alarm goes off before dawn on day two.
Practical note: Pack a small overnight bag for the summit and leave the main suitcase at the Tangkou hotel. Porter rates on the mountain are charged by weight, and the difference is significant.

2 Cable Car Ascent & the West Sea
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Huangshan summit hotel06:30 - Transfer and cable car: A short bus ride to the Mercy Light Pavilion cable station, then an eight-minute ascent through cloud that often breaks suddenly onto the granite.
08:00 - Beginning-to-Believe Peak: The first viewpoint and the place where, according to local saying, you begin to believe the paintings were not exaggerated. From here the path climbs toward the West Sea area with its deep valleys and improbable rock formations.
11:00 - Bright Summit: At 1,860 metres the second-highest peak and the best all-round viewpoint on the mountain. On a clear day the cloud fills the valleys below and only the summits remain — the described cloud sea. We allow a long stop here.
12:30 - Lunch: On the mountain. Simple, expensive for what it is, but the alternative is carrying it up yourself.
14:00 - West Sea Canyon: A loop of plank walkways bolted to the cliff face, with vertical drops and views into gorges that stay in shadow all afternoon. It is the most dramatic section of the mountain and the most photogenic.
17:30 - Sunset: We settle on a terrace near the hotel to watch the light go. Bring warm layers — the temperature drops sharply once the sun is behind the ridge.
19:00 - Dinner and rest at the summit hotel.

3 Sunrise, Greeting Pine & Descent
Breakfast Not included05:30 - Sunrise: For those who want it, a 20-minute walk to a sunrise terrace. On roughly half of all mornings the cloud sea is thick enough to be worth the early alarm; on the rest you get clear air and stars, which is its own reward. Your guide will tell you honestly whether the forecast justifies it.
07:30 - Breakfast at the hotel.
08:30 - Greeting Pine: A thousand-year-old pine growing from a rock shelf, its branches held out in what looks remarkably like a welcoming gesture. The most photographed tree in China, and the last major stop before descent.
10:00 - Descent: We take the Yuping cable car down, or walk the eastern steps for those with energy and knees to spare. The walk takes around 2.5 hours through the Hot Spring scenic area, past waterfalls and inscribed cliffs.
13:00 - Tangkou: Lunch at the foot of the mountain, then collect luggage.
15:00 - Departure: Transfer to Huangshan North station for your onward high-speed train, or to Tunxi airport.
