Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide: When & How to Visit

Jiuzhaigou Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Sichuan, is famous for its crystal-clear lakes, tiered waterfalls and autumn forests. This guide covers the best season, tickets, transport and a one-day route.

Best time to visit

Mid-September to late October is the peak: the forests turn gold and red, and the lakes glow turquoise under clear skies. Avoid the week-long National Day holiday in early October if you dislike crowds.

Tickets & transport

  • Entrance + shuttle bus: booked online in advance via the official WeChat mini-program.
  • From Chengdu: ~8h by direct bus, or fly to Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (JZH) then 1.5h transfer.
  • On-site: sightseeing buses connect the three main valleys (Rize, Zechawa, Shuzheng).

Suggested one-day route

Enter via Shuzheng, ride to the top of Rize Valley (Primeval Forest), then walk downhill past the Five Flower Lake and Pearl Shoal Waterfall, finish at Nuorilang Falls before looping back. Pace yourself — altitude is 2,000–3,100m.

Tip: Bring a light rain jacket and start early; the light on the lakes is best before noon.
