Chengdu Jinli & Kuanzhai Alley: A Night Food Walk

Chengdu moves at a gentle pace, and nowhere is that more obvious than its old streets after sunset. Jinli and Kuanzhai Alley (Kuanzhai Xiangzi) are the two classic evening strolls, both rebuilt in traditional Sichuan timber style but full of living culture.

Jinli: lanterns and snacks

Lined with red lanterns, Jinli packs dozens of snack stalls into a few hundred metres. Try chuanchuan (skewers in spicy broth), sugar-coated haws, and the famous three-cannon rice cakes. Street performers and shadow-puppet shows keep the atmosphere lively until late.

Kuanzhai Alley: three lanes, three moods

  • Kuan Xiangzi (Wide Lane) — bars, courtyards and boutique teahouses.
  • Zhai Xiangzi (Narrow Lane) — quieter, with craft shops and calligraphy.
  • Jing Xiangzi (Well Lane) — the most modern, good for coffee and photos.

Tips

Go after 6pm when the lanterns are lit, wear comfortable shoes, and save room — the food is the point. Pair it with a morning at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for a perfect one-day city trip.

Local saying: 少不入川 — “don’t come to Sichuan too young, you may never leave.”
