Overview
Langzhong is one of the four best-preserved ancient towns in China, and it has been continuously inhabited for more than 2,300 years. It sits in a loop of the Jialing River in northeastern Sichuan, and the feng shui of that position — water on three sides, mountains behind — is why it was a regional capital for centuries.
What survives is a walled grid of Ming and Qing streets and courtyard houses, several dozen of them intact and inhabited. The town's most famous residents were the Zhang brothers, who built an observatory here in the Han dynasty, and it remains a centre of Chinese astronomy and feng shui study to this day.
This two-day trip is deliberately slow. There is no checklist. You walk the lanes, visit the courtyards and the Huaguang Tower, eat the local beef and vinegar-braised dishes, drink tea on the riverbank, and watch the light go down over the water. It is the easiest trip we run and, for many people, the most restful.

1 Chengdu to Langzhong & the Old Town Lanes
Lunch Langzhong, courtyard guesthouse in the old town08:00 - Departure: A three and a half hour drive northeast from Chengdu to Langzhong, through the low hills and farmland of northeastern Sichuan.
11:30 - Arrival and lunch: The town's signature dishes are worth knowing before you order. Langzhong beef — braised, pressed and sliced thin — is sold from counters all over the old town. The local vinegar, Zhenjiang-style but darker, turns up in almost every dish. And the steamed buns, or zhengmo, are eaten with the beef at breakfast.
13:30 - The old town: The walled grid covers about two square kilometres and preserves 90-odd streets and lanes of Ming and Qing courtyard houses, most of them still occupied by families rather than converted to shops. We walk without a route: the flagstone lanes are narrow, the walls are brick and timber, and the courtyards open off the street behind carved gatehouses.
16:00 - Huaguang Tower: The tallest structure in the old town, a three-storey pavilion on the southern edge overlooking the Jialing. From the upper gallery you can see the river wrapping around three sides of the town, which is the feng shui configuration that made it a seat of government for two thousand years.
18:00 - Riverbank and dinner: The stretch along the water fills with teahouses and food stalls as the light goes. Dinner is on your own here, or your guide will take you to a courtyard restaurant serving the local braises.
Evening: Walk the lanes after dark. The town is quiet, the lanterns are lit, and it is the best hour of the day.

2 Zhang Fei Temple, the Observatory & Return
Breakfast, Lunch Not included08:30 - Zhang Fei Temple: The town's most important building, built on the site of the residence of Zhang Fei — one of the sworn brothers of the Three Kingdoms and the general who governed Langzhong for seven years until his death in 221 AD. He is buried here. The temple complex has been rebuilt several times but the tomb mound and the Ming-era halls survive, and the tablets and steles in the courtyards are original.
10:00 - Han astronomical observatory: Langzhong was one of the centres of Chinese astronomy. The Han-era astronomers Zhang Daoling and, later, the Tang astronomers Yuan Tiangang and Li Chunfeng worked and are buried here, and the site had a formal observatory from an early date. The modern reconstruction on the hillside explains the instruments and the town's role in Chinese cosmological thinking, which is inseparable from its feng shui reputation.
11:30 - Courtyard visits: Two or three of the better-preserved courtyard houses open to visitors — typically the Qin Family Compound and one or two others — with carved beams, screen walls, and the planted courtyards that are the core of Sichuan domestic architecture.
12:30 - Lunch: A final meal of the local specialities before leaving.
14:00 - Departure: The drive back to Chengdu, around three and a half hours, arriving around 17:30.
Practical note: If you would like to add the nearby Guangyuan or the Jianmen Pass — the mountain fortress of the Shu kingdom, an hour north — tell us at booking and we can extend by a day.
