Overview

Mount Huashan is the westernmost of China's Five Great Mountains and, by common consent, the most frightening. Its plank walk is a 100-metre stretch of wooden boards bolted to a near-vertical cliff face, crossed in a harness with a carabiner clipped to a steel cable.

It is safe. Thousands of people do it daily, the equipment is regularly inspected, and there is a second cable. It is also genuinely exhilarating in a way few accessible hikes manage, because the drop below you is real and uninterrupted.

This two-day trip takes the efficient route: cable car up the West Peak in the afternoon, the plank walk and South Peak the next morning, and a night on or near the summit so you are in position for sunrise. Even without the plank section, the mountain's four granite peaks, clifftop temples and vertical stairways make it one of the best mountain days within reach of Xi'an.

  • The Huashan plank walk — boards on a cliff face at 2,100 m, clipped to a safety cable
  • Sunrise from East Peak, the best viewpoint on the mountain
  • South Peak, the highest of the five summits at 2,154 m
  • West Peak cable car, one of the longest and steepest in Asia
  • Clifftop Taoist temples and the thousands of steps between summits
  • Overnight on the mountain to beat the day crowds

Itinerary

  1. 1 Xi'an to Huashan, West Peak Ascent
    Lunch Huashan summit hostel (basic)

07:30 - Departure: A two-hour drive east from Xi'an to the Huashan visitor centre. Your guide briefs the group in the car — route, weather, what the plank walk involves and how the harness works.

10:00 - Transfer and cable car: A green bus runs the 20 minutes to the West Peak cable car, which climbs more than 800 vertical metres in around eight minutes through granite scenery that gives you fair warning of what is coming.

11:00 - West Peak: Known as the Lotus Flower Peak for the shape of its summit rock. We walk the ridge path toward the South Peak, passing the immensely steep steps and chains that have been the mountain's signature for a thousand years. The views from here are across the Qinling range north to the Wei River valley.

12:30 - Lunch: On the mountain, simple and filling.

14:00 - South Peak and East Peak: We continue over the highest summit (2,154 m) and down toward the East Peak hostel area, checking in and leaving bags.

17:00 - Sunset: From a terrace near the East Peak, watching the light go down over the Qinling foothills.

Important: The plank walk is closed in high wind, ice or heavy rain, and the mountain authorities make the call on the day. If it is closed, your guide substitutes the South Peak ridge and the Black Dragon Ridge walks. Refunds for the plank section are issued on site for unused harness hire.

  2. 2 Sunrise, Plank Walk & Descent
    Breakfast Not included

05:30 - Sunrise: A short walk from the hostel to the East Peak sunrise terrace. On clear mornings the sun comes up over the plains toward the Yellow River, with cloud below the ridges. It is cold up here even in summer — bring the layers you packed.

07:00 - Breakfast at the hostel.

08:00 - The plank walk: We reach the plank section early, before the queues build. You clip a harness to a steel cable and step out onto boards roughly 30 centimetres wide, fixed into the granite with iron brackets, some of them a thousand years old. The exposed sections are short; the intimidating part is the first ten metres. Your guide goes first and comes back for anyone who hesitates — turning around is always possible until the narrowest point.

10:00 - Return via the Middle and North Peaks: If time and legs allow, we take the longer descent through the middle of the mountain, passing the Golden Lock Pass with its thousands of inscribed padlocks left by visitors.

13:00 - Descent: Cable car down from the West Peak, or on foot via the North Peak if the group wants the full experience (around three hours of steep steps).

16:00 - Return: Transfer back to Xi'an, arriving around 18:00, or directly to the airport or station if you are travelling on.
