Overview
Xi'an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and the capital of eleven dynasties. Three days is enough to feel the weight of that without rushing it.
Day one is yours to arrive and settle inside the wall. Day two goes east to the Terracotta Army, given a full morning because the site deserves one — three pits, thousands of figures, and a museum that explains how they were made and why they were buried facing east. The afternoon returns for the city wall, which you cycle along its 13.7-kilometre circuit on the only complete Ming city wall still standing in China.
Day three covers the Great Wild Goose Pagoda, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Bell Tower before departure. The Muslim Quarter runs as an evening thread through all three days — it is Xi'an's best open-air restaurant, and you will want to return more than once.
- Terracotta Army with a full morning and a guide who explains the excavation
- Bicycle ride along the 13.7-km Ming city wall at your own pace
- Shaanxi History Museum, one of China's finest regional collections
- Muslim Quarter night market for lamb skewers, biangbiang noodles and pomegranate juice
- Great Wild Goose Pagoda and the Tang dynasty North Square fountain show
- Central hotel inside the city wall, small group, no shopping stops

1 Arrival in Xi'an & the Muslim Quarter
Dinner Xi'an, 4-star hotel inside the city wallAfternoon: Your guide meets you at Xi'an Xianyang (XIY) airport or Xi'an North railway station — a 4.5-hour high-speed ride from Beijing, or 6 hours from Shanghai — and transfers you to your hotel inside the Ming city wall.
Late afternoon: A short orientation walk to the Bell Tower, the largest and best-preserved of its kind in China, built in 1384 at the exact geometric centre of the city. From its upper gallery you can see the four main avenues running to the cardinal gates.
Evening: The Muslim Quarter, a few streets northwest of the tower. This is the Hui Muslim neighbourhood that grew up around the Great Mosque, and after dark it becomes one of the great street-food markets of Asia: lamb skewers over charcoal, biangbiang noodles pulled and slapped against the board, roujiamo — shredded pork in a flatbread, often called the Chinese hamburger — and freshly pressed pomegranate juice. Dinner here is included, or you can graze independently and let your guide order for you.
Practical note: The Great Mosque itself opens to visitors during the day and is worth a return visit; it is Chinese in architecture and Islamic in function, which is a combination few travellers expect.

2 Terracotta Army & the Ming City Wall
Breakfast, Lunch Xi'an, 4-star hotel inside the city wall08:00 - Departure: A 50-minute drive east to Lintong district.
09:00 - Terracotta Army: Discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well, the mausoleum guard of Qin Shi Huang — the first emperor — comprises three excavated pits holding more than 8,000 figures. We begin at Pit 1, the vast hangar where the main infantry formation stands in eleven columns, then move to Pit 3 (the command post) and Pit 2 (the mixed cavalry and chariot unit, still being excavated). Your guide explains the casting and assembly method, why every face is different, and how the original polychrome paint survives only minutes once exposed to air. The museum's bronze chariot hall is included and often overlooked — two half-size chariots of extraordinary detail.
12:30 - Lunch: A restaurant near the site serving Shaanxi specialities.
14:30 - The city wall: Built on Tang foundations and faced in brick under the Ming, 13.7 kilometres of rampart enclosing the old city, with a moat, drawbridges and 98 ramparts. We hire bicycles at the South Gate and ride the circuit at your own pace — two to three hours for the full loop, or a shorter section if you prefer. It is the best way to see the grid of the old capital and the modern city beyond it.
18:00 - Free evening: Your guide can reserve the Tang dynasty show, a dinner-and-performance of music and dance in the style of the dynasty that made Xi'an the largest city in the world.

3 Wild Goose Pagoda, History Museum & Departure
Breakfast, Lunch Not included08:30 - Great Wild Goose Pagoda: A brick pagoda of 652 AD, built to house the Buddhist sutras the monk Xuanzang brought back from India after a sixteen-year journey — the pilgrimage that inspired Journey to the West. You can climb to the upper storeys for a view over the South Square, where the largest musical fountain in Asia performs several times a day.
10:30 - Shaanxi History Museum: Free entry, and one of the best regional museums in the country. Its Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang galleries trace three thousand years of Chinese civilisation through bronzes, gold, ceramics and murals. This is the museum that makes sense of everything else you have seen.
12:30 - Lunch: Near the museum, with the option of a proper sit-down dumpling banquet — the local repertoire runs to dozens of fillings and shapes.
14:00 - Small Wild Goose Pagoda or departure: Depending on your train or flight, we visit the smaller 8th-century pagoda in the Jianfu Temple grounds, or transfer directly.
15:30 - Departure: Transfer to Xi'an North railway station or Xianyang airport.
