Mount Emei Golden Summit: Sunrise Above the Clouds
Mount Emei is one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains, and its Golden Summit (Jinding, 3,079m) is the reward for the journey: a 48-metre golden Samantabhadra statue, a sea of clouds, and a sunrise that draws pilgrims and hikers alike.
Getting up
Most visitors take the scenic bus from the base to Leidongping, then a short walk and the cable car to the summit. Stay overnight nearby to catch sunrise without a 4am struggle.
What to see
- Golden Summit — the gilded statue and cliff-edge viewpoints.
- Wannian Temple — an ancient hall with a bronze pagoda.
- Monkeys — the wild macaques along the middle trails (keep food hidden!).
Best season
Spring and autumn offer the clearest skies. Winter is cold but magical with rime ice. Combine Emei with nearby Leshan Giant Buddha in a two-day trip.
