Yunnan Yuanyang Rice Terraces 4-Day Photography Tour

1. 1 Kunming to Yuanyang, Sunset at Laohuzui

   🍽Lunch 🏨Yuanyang terrace guesthouse

   07:30 - Departure: A five to six hour drive south from Kunming, dropping from 1,890 metres to around 1,600 and then climbing into the Ailao mountains. If the high-speed rail schedule suits, we take the train to Jianshui and drive the last two hours.

   13:30 - Arrival and lunch in Xinjie, the small town at the centre of the terrace area.

   15:00 - Laohuzui: The Tiger Mouth, and the most dramatic of the four viewpoints — terraces falling away in a sheer cascade of curves for several hundred metres, with the ridge lines of the next mountain range behind. We arrive mid-afternoon so you can walk the rim path and work out your compositions before the light goes.

   17:30 - Sunset: The water in the terraces catches the last light and the whole mountainside turns copper. Bring warm layers; it cools fast at this altitude once the sun is down.

   19:00 - Dinner and rest at the guesthouse. Your guide confirms the alarm for the morning — around 05:30 depending on the season.

2. 2 Duoyishu Sunrise, Qingkou Village & Bada Sunset

   05:30 - Transfer: A short drive through the dark to the Duoyishu viewpoint.

   06:15 - Sunrise: Duoyishu is the largest of the four terrace clusters and the one that produces the famous images — a bowl of mountainside entirely covered in flooded fields, each one a mirror, with cloud usually filling the valley below and villages sitting on the ridges like islands. In the twenty minutes around sunrise the water goes from pewter to rose to gold. On perhaps one morning in three the cloud is low enough to give you the full effect; on the others you get clear light on the ridges, which photographers often prefer.

   09:00 - Breakfast back at the guesthouse.

   10:30 - Qingkou village: A Hani village in the middle of the terraces, with the mushroom-roofed houses the Hani build — thick mud-brick walls and a conical thatch roof that sheds the heavy rain. The village is part of the UNESCO site and has a small museum on the Hani agricultural system: the forest at the top, the villages in the middle, the terraces below, and the water channels that connect them.

   12:30 - Lunch: A Hani home meal — red rice from the terraces, smoked pork, wild vegetables and the sour bamboo the Hani ferment.

   14:00 - Rest: A real break, so you are not wrecked by the second sunrise.

   17:00 - Bada sunset: A different prospect from Laohuzui — the terraces here step down in narrower bands with a long view along the ridge. Fewer people come, and the walk along the path gives several compositions.

3. 3 Market Morning, Terrace Walk & Duoyishu Return

   07:00 - Market: Depending on the day, the market at Xinjie or one of the smaller valley towns, where Hani, Yi and Miao farmers come down from the mountain villages to sell and buy. Livestock, chickens in woven baskets, wild honey, mountain herbs, hand-woven cloth and an extraordinary range of chillies. It is the most alive place in the region and the best portrait opportunity anywhere on this trip.

   10:00 - Terrace walk: We walk down into the terraces themselves rather than looking at them from above — paths follow the bund walls between fields, past irrigation channels and the small stone shrines the Hani maintain for the water spirits. Depending on the season you will see flooded fields, rice in growth, or the harvest stubble. Around two hours, with a few steep but short sections.

   12:30 - Lunch: In a village near the walk.

   14:00 - Rest or second viewpoint: A free afternoon, or a return to whichever viewpoint the group wants another attempt at.

   17:00 - Hani home dinner: In a village house, eating what the family eats — terrace rice, wild greens, cured meat and rice wine. The Hani are generous hosts and the evening often runs long.

   Practical note: If you have a favourite viewpoint you want to revisit at a different hour, tell your guide on day two and we will build it into the schedule.

4. 4 Final Sunrise & Return to Kunming

   05:30 - Transfer: Your choice of viewpoint for a last attempt — Duoyishu for the scale, or Laohuzui if the first evening was cloudy.

   06:15 - Sunrise: The last shoot. Your guide will have been watching the sky for four days and will advise honestly which location gives the best chance.

   08:30 - Breakfast and check-out.

   10:00 - Departure: The drive back to Kunming, around six hours, or by road to Jianshui and high-speed rail onward.

   16:30 - Arrival in Kunming: Drop-off at your hotel, Kunming Changshui airport, or the railway station.

   Practical note: Yuanyang is at 1,600 to 2,000 metres and the terrace paths are uneven and often wet. Sturdy shoes with grip are essential, and a head torch is provided for the pre-dawn starts.
