Overview
Two days in the most vertical city in China: the stilt houses of Hongyadong, the monorail through a residential building, a Yangtze cableway crossing and the neon peninsula from the Nanshan ridge.
Chongqing is built on rock between two rivers, and the easiest way to understand it is to walk its stairways — whole neighbourhoods here are connected by public steps rather than roads. This itinerary uses that: the Liziba monorail, which runs straight through the sixth to eighth floors of a nineteen-storey apartment block; Hongyadong, an eleven-storey stilt-house complex built into the cliff above the Jialing; and the Yangtze cableway, which has carried commuters across the river since 1987.
There is hotpot, eaten in a converted wartime air-raid shelter where the stone walls stay cool despite a hundred boiling pots. There is Xiaomian, the chilli-oil breakfast noodle the city runs on. And at dusk we drive up to Nanshan for the view that defines the place — the whole peninsula lit up between the Yangtze and Jialing, stacked up the slope.
Two days, no shopping stops, and a guide who knows which stairway leads where.

Arrive and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon at Ciqikou ancient town, then evening at Hongyadong and a Yangtze River light cruise.

Morning at the Three Gorges Museum and a cable-car crossing, then a hotpot lunch before your transfer to the airport or station.
